Almost A Whole Year

Oh my goodness!!! It has been almost a whole year since I last posted. It's funny... I just re-read my list of goals and basically -- I am just getting started on it. I am now back online and trying to get back into the swing of things.

So far, I have completed:

** Updating my husband's site at http://www.almostanythingservices.com/
** Built a new site at http://www.creativewahm.com/ and I am excited to begin to market that.
** Come here to see if I made any money over the last 11 months.

Curious? Me too. Here is the list:

Adsense: $1.93
Payloadz: $0.00 but that may be because I had an non-working email address. :(
Commission Junction: $0.00
Amazon: $0.00
Click Bank: Cannot locate my account
Share A Sale: Waiting for new user name & password

Well, it definitely wasn't a good idea for this site to not be around for this long. Let's see if I can change that for the better.

See you soon!

Doing things a little different...

Okay, I am going to do things a little differently this week. I take this amazing class on SEO from Cricket. You can find it here: http://www.gnc-web-creations.com/seo-optimization.htm.

Through this class, I received a small questionnaire and I thought I would share some of it with you here. While this doesn't have a lot of direct relevance to affiliate marketing, it will show my "big picture" and why I don't always work on the www.mels-attic.com site all the time.

By the way, the only money I made was today by selling some ad space in GOODNESS™. (Thank you!)

...............

1. Tell me about your business: Okay... here is the main part of my problem. I had ADD and it shows up here big time. I think I will list my sites and then work on what their focus should be and where on the priority list they belong.

-- http://www.almostanythingservices.com/ -- This should be my number one priority, because it is the only one that makes money. It is my husband's business as a handyman. I am supposed to handle the business part of it: website, marketing, bookkeeping, etc. I need to start inputting everything into Quickbooks and help my husband take this business to the next level. To do this, I must get my office in order. There is no desk space and barely room to walk. Organizing the office and then all the paperwork for the only true company we have needs to become the main focus immediately.

-- http://www.mels-attic.com/ -- This is what I regard as my main site. I had taken it offline awhile ago and I am now trying to get it up and running again. I offer web design and writing services from it, but I shouldn't as these would be better served at other sites. I need to narrow the focus and figure out what would be the best way to make money from this site. It has articles, graphics, my eBook that not one person has purchased and it is the home for GOODNESS™ which I think would be better served having its own site. I also have craft tutorials, paint shop pro tutorials, positive affirmations and affiliate marketing links that aren't working for me. Oh... and it also has a resource section and a newsletter directory that I hope will be useful to people. The site is meant to be a motivational and inspirational site to help people be more creative in general. This is where I want to share everything I have with everyone. I hosted a contest this month on this site and it had a HUGE turnout. I need to put all of the entries into a database so I can use a program to choose a winner on May 2nd. I haven't even begun and I think I have over 1,000 to go through. I'm a little overwhelmed, but this is too important and I can't screw it up. I used to have a site at melsattic.com (I couldn't get the name back) and when I left the online world... well, I want to earn back my reputation.

-- http://www.melissaolivero.com/ -- This is my "author" site. I should be promoting writing services from here. The site needs to be redone to focus on that. I also need to work on getting more article published instead of using them on my own sites or not doing anything with them at all. I have a self-help book that is almost completed that I need to really finish and I need to set up a writing schedule for myself. Writing is my dream and I have never allowed for the possibility of it becoming a reality. I need to change my mindset and realize that I can achieve these goals. Once I am done with my husband's company, then I need to make this my personal priority.

-- http://www.thinkingwahm.com/ -- This is the site where I offer personalized address labels and business cards. I use to sell labels quite well on eBay and thought that I could do that again. Times have changed and I do not love the work enough to try to stand out against the enormous amount of competition that is out there. I should redesign the site and offer web design services from here.

-- http://www.redlilypress.com/ -- When I found out that I would probably have to publish my self-help book on my own, my husband and I thought we could open a publishing company and help other writers. We unexpectedly got the opportunity to purchase a house though and use our entire savings to get in it. That meant that we no longer had the funds to open up this company. I should move the newsletter information here and make it the official home of GOODNESS™.

-- http://www.oliveroinc.com/ -- Empty domain that is meant to be a main listing of all of our sites.

-- http://www.inspiringyourspirit.com/ -- This is the title of my book. While it is empty, when I do finish the book -- I will begin marketing it from here.

-- http://www.creativewahm.com/ -- Empty domain that was meant to be a WAHM resource site for thinking outside the box when it comes to marketing your home business and about keeping it real in regards to having a business while you are surrounded by toddlers. I also thought about making into one of those places that sell ad space to other WAHMs. I don't know what I should do with it now.

-- http://www.lilybuds.com/ -- Empty domain that was meant to house eBooks for children when we were going to have the publishing company. I have thought about having it be a consignment shop for children's artwork with half the profits going to a children's charity. I have also thought about just writing a few articles and making it an affiliate site where I recommend products for infants on up. With a 5 year old son and 2 year old boy/girl twins -- I've tried about every toy under the sun and have opinions about everything when it comes to parenting. I don't know what I should do with it now.

-- http://www.paganpapers.com/ -- I wanted to have a place to sell alternative religious address labels with new age, witchy and other symbols. I am on the fence with this because while I feel that this is a market no one is covering... I don't know if I can find the time/energy to put into it. I need a way to bring in some money fairly quickly, so this might move up on the priority list just so I can give it a try to see if it works.

-- http://www.wahm-business-ideas.com/ -- I thought about changing the name of my eBook to this (currently Home Business Ideas for Mothers), lowering the price and marketing it a little differently. Or I can give it away for free from this site as a bonus for a separate newsletter I have wanted to start.

Okay -- that makes 11. A little too much, don't you think? Now you can imagine what my office looks like because I am that scattered right now in real life too.

2. How did you get started or happen to choose your specific business?

Well, the handyman business is my husband's. He is working on his electrical master's license and until then works as a handyman. He has a day job as a maintenance supervisor so it made sense.

The writing thing -- it is my dream. The web design stuff -- I like helping other people set their businesses up and that is my way of doing it. I have a lot more to learn though. The labels -- it was just something I stumbled into.

3. Are you passionate about your business? (or the information you offer) I am passionate about writing and about helping others get their businesses off the ground. The rest... the web design is just a means to the end and the labels I could live without.

Why? I am not good at appreciating who I am and writing is the only area in my life that I have ever been able to accept myself being talented.

4. What do you feel makes your business (or the information you offer)
different from all of the others out there providing the same thing?

I feel that my writing voice is unique and that I have a lot to offer others. My range of knowledge is extensive... while I do not consider myself an expert on anything, I do know a little about a lot of things. If I do not know the topic, my love of research helps to get me there. I know that I reach people when I write and have an ability to help people see different perspectives, especially in viewing themselves in a more positive light. My dream is to help women who suffer with mental illness specifically due to abuse issues. I hope through my writing and perhaps becoming a motivational speaker, I can help many women learn to love themselves and move beyond their pasts. This is my ultimate goal. Right now, I need to figure out the best path that puts me there.

Thank you so much for helping me to put this all down on paper. I am going to print this out and go over it. While some of those 11 sites may help me generate enough income to put me on the right path to my ultimate goal, I know that many are just time wasters and unnecessary expenses. My first priority is to get the office in order, because I cannot think. Then I will work on my husband's site and then work on me.

Just getting started...

No drum roll necessary. I made $.05 with Google Adsense and that was it. None of the other companies brought anything in. What does this mean? Should I give up?

Of course not! I am just getting started. I made less this week because it reflects the amount of work I put into promoting and working on the site this week. Obviously, I didn't do very much.

I am a couple of thousand emails behind and need to concentrate on catching up. We'll see what I can come up with this week. =)

Hugs,
Melissa

A Day Late...

But am I a dollar short? Let's get right to it:

Oh my goodness! Look --

AdSense: $1.23 (Yippee! This is getting exciting now. LOL)
PayLoadz: $0.00
Commission Junction: $0.00
Amazon: $0.00
Click Bank: $0.00
Share A Sale: $0.00

Yes, I added a new company: Share A Sale. That will probably be it as far as affiliate programs go as I obviously need to learn more about what I already have.

I did submit the site to Google and Yahoo and I added a new article about Offline Marketing too. Additionally, on the old melsattic site, I used to have a huge portal of links. I am rebuilding that on a slightly smaller scale in the resource section. It will basically act as small directories for certain subjects. Oh yes, I also paid for three ads: one solo email ad and two button ads.

My next steps are to finish those directories and ask for some link exchanges. Then I am going to revamp my other sites and make sure that they are linking to the new mels-attic.com.

See you next week and thanks for reading!
Hugs,
Melissa

Am I Winning?

Hi! How are you all doing? I've been busy this week. I have yet to submit my site (http://www.mels-attic.com) to any search engines yet, but I did do something big to drive traffic to my site. I am holding a contest.

I wanted to hold the contest because I wanted to celebrate in a big way that I am back to being MelsAttic. I wanted a way to be able to give to others because I have been so blessed lately. And I wanted to drive traffic to my site. So, the Celebration Contest was born.

So, the website has been open for basically two weeks. My first week open, I had 184 unique visitors according to my Awstats in my cPanel. I opened the contest on April 1st and today is April 6th. In that time, I have had 577 unique visitors. That is pretty fantastic, right? Amazing really... almost 600 different people have visited Mel's Attic in six days.

The benefit of this is that many of these visitors signed up for my monthly newsletter, GOODNESS™.

The not-so-good news is that it had absolutely no affect on my affiliate links.

You see, because of the way I set the contest up -- straight entry form -- most folks went directly to the contest page and left directly from there. A good majority of those 577 people never even browsed the site at all. So there was no clicking on links to earn any affiliate money.

My numbers for this week:

AdSense: $.39
PayLoadz: $.00
Commission Junction: $.00
Amazon: $.00
Click Bank: $.00

If you check last week's post, you will see that I actually made less this week than I did my opening week. ::::sigh::::

This was still a winning week though. Why?
  1. I now have a really nice-sized mailing list for GOODNESS™. Which means I get to help a lot more people.
  2. I learned that next month's contest is going to be different. I am going to create a scavenger hunt type questionnaire that will force people to actually look at the site.
  3. I know that it is now time to submit my site to the search engines.
What I gained in subscribers and what I learned was definitely worth the prizes, time and effort and I have the added bonus of being able to give things away to people.

Cool. =)

Melissa

Still learning...

Okay, here is my first Friday update post. That means we are off to a good start and I am paying attention. Do I get extra click-throughs for that? *smiles*

I haven't added any new affiliates since I opened the site and this blog last week. Let's see how it worked for me this week.

Google AdSense = $.44
Payloadz = $.00
Commission Junction = $.00
Amazon = $.00
Click Bank = $.00

This is actually better than I expected. All right, I know it is only $.44, but I have yet to submit the site to any search engine. Google found it probably due to this blog. And personally, I have done little to promote the site. So, for it to have made any money at all is huge and I am thankful.

Wish me luck and I'll see you next Friday!

Hugs,
Melissa

The Beginning

I have officially begun my new life as an Affiliate Princess. One day, I will have learned enough to earn the title of Queen, but for now -- I'm still in training.

I admit that I am brand spanking new to affiliate marketing. With all the websites I have had over the years, I have never tried it before. I am excited and determined to be successful with it. I would like you to learn with me though, okay? I welcome your comments and hope that you will share some of your experiences, tips and encouragement.

All right, it's time for a little background. I used to have this HUGE website called MelsAttic. Then a year and a half or so ago, I went through this rough depressive episode where I just didn't want to be me any longer. I had tons of visitors, a nice little mailing list going and some really great friends. I don't know what happened... my dad's cancer had come back (successfully fought off a second time, thank goodness), there was no direction in my life, and along came a really bad PMS (no joke) and I quit being MelsAttic. Stopped being me in hopes of finding myself. I shut down my wonderful website, screwed up on a Secret Pal thing which I still haven't forgiven myself for, lost contact with almost all of my online friends and eventually got hooked on Everquest II for awhile.

I worked hard mentally to get through it. Wonderful things began to happen: my dad got better (though he just went through another major health crisis), we got out of our tiny apartment into a fantastic real home and I wanted to get back into the swing of things. I tried creating a couple of sites, but they didn't work. Then I realized I had to go back to being me. Since I couldn't get the original domain name, I am re-born as Mel's Attic and I'm loving it. The new site has some new sections and I've added affiliate marketing into the mix which brings us nicely around to the point of this blog.

I have signed up to affiliate for Amazon.com, Commission Junction, Google's AdSense, PayLoadz and ClickBank. The majority of products and services will things I have either read or experienced personally, though there will be a small percentage that will be random. Most programs do not allow for folks to share specifics. I will try to abide by that and still share with you as much as I can.

The first thing I did was try to match the ad to the content on the page. For instance, on the article on ADD, I am promoting the book I read "Driven To Distraction". I did this because if you suspect you have ADD or have already been diagnosed with this, then I really, really, really want you to read that book. It helped me tremendously and I want you to be helped to. On the main page on my graphics sections, I have an ad for Poser. I absolutely LOVE the work that people create with the product and if you are artistically inclined, I believe it is something you need to try because I think you'll love it too. But on the site map page, I allow Amazon to choose products at random. This is because there is really nothing to tie in with that page.

To sign up with these programs, all it takes is time. You do not pay a fee. You shouldn't have to pay a charge to promote someone else's products when you aren't receiving any material in return. This differs from direct sales, because when you start up with a home party plan company, you are purchasing training and marketing material from them. You will be giving them your personal information including your social security number for tax reasons. This is safe only when you see the little lock on the bottom of your screen letting you know that the site is secure.

Okay, that's it for now. I'll be honest and say that in the past, I haven't had good luck with blogs in that sometimes I forget to post to them. My goal is to at least pop in every Friday to let you know if I have made any money and if so, from who and how fast I actually get paid. So, I'll see you soon and feel free to let me know if you have any questions. I'm so new at this -- I don't know what to ask. =)

Hugs,
Melissa
